When I began seeing spirit as a young child, those who had crossed over to the other side, I assumed it was completely normal. I thought everyone could see these ethereal beings, so I didn’t question it. I also experienced premonitions through dreams that would later come true. As a child and teen, this was simply how I experienced the world.
It wasn’t until I reached adulthood and went through a period of losing my faith that spirit stopped coming through. Life has a way of clouding our connection when we’re weighed down by grief, trauma, or distraction.
When I was 48 years old, spirit began to come around again. It happened when my mother passed—her spirit came to me the very night she died. I felt her presence so clearly, as if she were standing beside me. That was the moment when the veil between the two worlds lifted for me once more. It marked the beginning of my return to mediumship, a time when the spirit world reminded me of who I truly am and why I was born with this gift.
What It’s Like to Be a Spiritual Medium
Being a medium is like living in two (or more) dimensions at once. I experience the world through multiple clair-senses, the intuitive abilities that allow spirit to communicate.
Clairvoyance – Clear Seeing
I see spirit through my mind’s eye or third eye. When spirit appears to me, they often look “see-through,” like a translucent shadow, usually visible against a plain wall. I’ve learned how to turn this ability on and off, which was a crucial part of my spiritual training. I can also see auras by tuning into the energy field around a person.
Clairsentience – Clear Feeling
This is the gift of feeling energy and emotions. I am both an empath and an HSP (Highly Sensitive Person), which means I used to absorb energy like a sponge, until I learned how to manage and protect my energetic boundaries. Clairsentience allows me to sense what others are feeling, and I often feel what spirit felt emotionally or physically before passing.
Clairaudience – Clear Hearing
Spirit communicates with me through words, sounds, or music that I hear in my mind. In the beginning, it was hard to tell the difference between my own thoughts and those coming from spirit. But once I accepted that these connections are real, I began to recognize the unique tone and timing of spiritual messages. It’s subtle but unmistakable.
Claircognizance – Clear Knowing
This is the quiet inner knowing that arrives without logic or evidence, it just is. I often experience this during readings. I’ll simply know who is coming through, how they passed, or what message they need to share. It’s like spirit drops a seed of truth straight into my awareness.
Clairsalience (Clairolfactance) – Clear Smelling
Sometimes spirit brings through a scent to trigger a memory or offer validation. I might suddenly smell cigarette smoke, a specific cologne, or a familiar kitchen spice, when nothing in the environment explains it. These moments often bring comfort and connection for the person I’m reading for.
Spirit Feels Like Love
If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like when spirit comes through, it’s love. Pure, unconditional, eternal love. Not the kind we chase here on Earth, but the kind that just is.
In the end, we don’t take our money, possessions, or even our bodies with us. Everything fades, except love. That’s what we’re made of, and that’s what remains.
I believe in love and I believe in spirit. I believe that spirit comes through with the best intentions. We enter this world as love, and we leave it the same way.
